Coronado Railroad Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

jahoadi and john: Letting it go. We are so saddened by our society that trashes areas, puts graffiti (NOT ART) on areas, destroys historical markers/areas. This area is just so trashed. What a shame. Jahoadi and John

Geocache Description:

The Coronado Railroad, also known as the Belt Line, started operation in 1888, running around the southern end of San Diego Bay from National City to the new Hotel del Coronado. It was deemed necessary to build a railroad around the bay to help transport freight and passengers. Construction began early in 1888 and trains were running to Coronado in June of the same year. Passenger service continued until 1896. Later, a portion of the line was electrified and incorporated into the San Diego Electric Railway.
In 1908 the non-electrified remnants of the National City & Otay and the Belt Line merged into the San Diego Southern which operated rail services between San Diego, National City, Chula Vista, Coronado, Sweetwater, and the border. The tracks of the Belt Line from Imperial Beach to the Del Coronado Hotel remained until 1970. The tracks are still in place from Cleveland Avenue in National City through to Imperial Beach.
This cache is a regular cache located along the Bayshore Bikeway near an interpretive sign and a portion of the old Coronado Railroad. Be sure to hide it well to protect it from the paint-spray-can-carrying disrespectful muggles that have already maimed the sign.
