Geocache Description:

Easy, level walk in to this location from most directions.

Wisley Airfield is a traditional cache, adjacent to the old 10/28 runway of the disused Wisley airfield.

10/28 refers to the orientation of the runway - 100 Degrees in one direction and 280 degrees if using the runway in the reverse direction

Wisley Airfield was requisitioned in 1943 for use by Vickers and five farms were demolished to make way for the runway and its associated buildings.

Apparently, Wellington bombers were built at nearby Brooklands but due to the short runway at Brooklands, the Wellingtons were flown to nearby Wisley in a "stripped down" condition and fitted out with their armament etc and then flown out to their operational bases.

Later, VC10s were also fitted out at Wisley.

The runway is 6,500 feet or 1.2 miles in length, although there now are barriers across it to prevent it being used as an illegal "drag strip"!

The airfield was closed in 1972.

Lately, there have been planning applications for waste incinerators and compost handling facilities, all of which have been vociferously opposed by local residents and action groups.

The strange looking erection on the NE side of the runway is Ockham VOR/DME used by modern day aircraft for navigation. The Ockham beacon is used as a "Stack" or "Hold" for Heathrow in bound flights waiting to land. So next time you fly in to Heathrow, approaching from the South West, look out for Ockham Airfield below and see if you can spot the location you found when you visited this cache!

The Cache is located just off the runway on the "slip" to the apron.

When placed there was a plethora of plastic toys, ideal for kids, two travel bugs and a FTF certificate.

When you approach the Cache location, the exact position will be obvious so there are no hints - If you can't find this one, consider selling the GPS and taking up knitting ;-)
