On Sept. 15, 1857 the John Butterfield Company was awarded the mail contract by Congress. On Sept. 16, 1858 the first trip was launched The cost for one way fare was $200 (equivalent to $3,000 today). Or 15 cents per mile for shorter trips. In 1869 the first Transcontinental Railroad was finished and the need for travel by stagecoach was no more.
