Spring Lawn Paper Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

This traditional cache is located along the 2.1 mile Springlawn Trail which runs beside the Big Elk Creek utilizing vacated Township Road T-354 (Springlawn Road) between Chesterville Road (Rt. 841) and Strickersville Road. GPS coordinates for the trailheads located at both ends of the trail are shown below. Roundtrip distance from the Rt 841 trailhead is 1.7 miles and from the Strickersville RD trailhead is 2.5 miles.

This cache will take you to an old stone building along the Big Elk Creek. Based on historical maps of the area, we believe this building was part of the Spring Lawn Paper Mill built in 1828 by Robert Sherer and operated from 1828 to 1903. The mill made book and colored mediums on a moving wire machine. The mill had a Brightman engine and converted to wood pulp in 1870. The last owners were the Megargee Brothers from 1870 to 1903.

On the opposite side of the Springlawn Trail from the Mill (side of the trail away from the river) tracks from the old road which went straight up the hill and connected with Strickersville Road can be seen.

Had to move the cache a short distance from the original location. It was too visible and was plundered.

You do NOT need to enter any building or structure to find this cache.
