Geocache Description:

Cache is a camo-d tupperware container serving as a small Travel Bug Motel. Please bring your own writing implement.

Built in 1795 and in use until 1951, the Royal Naval Dockyards are steeped in much history. So much so it would be impossible to do it justice in this small space.

Here's a short list of historical information:

-Convicts from England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland helped to build the Dockyard
-Prisoners from the Boer War and WWII were held here
-A floating dock was created to allow for shipbuilding (1800's)
-The Blackwatch Regiment supervised the convicts and those barracks were utilized as a prison until 1995
-the RAF manned the Naval base in 1933-1939 building up seaplanes and servicing or replacing aircraft (Hawker Osprey, Fairey Seafox, Supermarine Walrus)
-During WWII the Dockyards became the form-up point for trans-Atlantic convoys; aerial patrols were provided and rescue missions for those on torpedoed Allied ships were carried out
-In WWII both the British and Canadian Navy had an anti-submarine training base, Dockyards was twinned with Halifax for military purposes
-During the Cold War, Dockyard's role in NATO was as a Naval base for the Royal Navy and the Canadian Navy

The clock on the South Tower was cast in 1857 in England.

The single hand clock on the North Tower is a tide clock. When the Naval base was active, this clock was set daily with the time of the high tide.

"Good bye, Ireland Island. Farewell the floating dock Good bye to spuds and onions. Chin Chin the Dockyard clock And when the boat you go home in steams out of Grassy Bay You'll love this place dearer when you're no nearer than three thousand miles away"

IMPORTANT NOTE: **CACHE is NOT BLACK. It appears that there is a rat trap in the vicinity but the cache is not near the trap***
