A small town of Truax where I would come at time to buy cherries when I was child.
Here for more then fifty years this small town business in Truax, Saskatchewan makes big box stores like Wal-Mart look inadequate. J.D. (Bud) Porter conducted business in this building from 1918 to 1975 including sale of meat, insurance, real estate, farm implements, hardware and beer. Bud was not just a salesman or storeowner but he also served as the Justice of the Peace, the Village Secretary and the secretary for various school districts until his death.
The building itself was built in 1911 by rural postmaster George Richel in the new proposed town site of Truax. Not knowing the exact location of the railroad, he built the building where he thought the new town site would be, only to discover that it was right in the middle of the right of way for the rails. He had to move the building to a new site but before it was opened as the post office, a change in government saw him loosing his position as the postmaster and he sold the vacant building to Charles Fitchell who opened it up as a butcher shop. In 1918 Bud Porter bought the business and enlarged it in the 1920’s to accommodate his growing business. A detailed account of the building history and Bud Porter are posted in the window along with copies of some historical documents. Please take the time to read when you visit the cache.
