Geocache Description:

BUTTER MOUNTAIN.

Park at Ott/Blue Quarry carpark.

The dual names for this car park can be attributed in the first instance to the proximity of Ott Mountain and Ott Track (which starts opposite this car park), even though the car park is situated at the foot of Butter Mountain. It is thought that the name “Blue Quarry” refers to the bluish stone that was extracted from the site in the past, which was a mix of Silurian greywacke and slate. The car park and hollow beside it marks the site of the old quarry. Along the road running south from this car park, past Spelga Dam and on to Kilkeel, marks the boundary between the Eastern and Western Mournes. The car park is on the Western side of the Mournes.

Sliabh an Ime 'mountain of the butter' stands at 500 metres. The name 'Butter Mountain' is not a reference to EU surpluses. It probably comes from the practice of burying butter to preserve it. It was used by people who tended cattle in the mountains during the summer. [Mícheál Ó Mainnín]

THE WILD LIFE you might expect to see in this area includes the wheatear and meadow pippet. From June to late August the keeled skimmer dragonfly may be seen around shallow flushes and pools. Keep a look out for Ireland’s only reptile – the small common lizard.

THE TRAIL, from Blue Quarry car park to Spelga Pass, crosses open hillside and is not waymarked. Waterproof and windproof clothing are strongly advised and good walking boots essential. Remember that the weather conditions can change at any time in the Mournes.

THE CACHE is placed on Butter Mountain. It is a short walk to the summit, which should take around 10 minutes (one way), or a little more at a leisurely pace. With care this cache would be ideal for families as it gives a chance to "conquer" a mountain, yet it isn't a significant walk.

On a good day there are great views of Spelga Dam, Bearnagh, Ott, Carn and other surrounding mountains. Gaiters may be needed in wet weather as the ground may be boggy in places.

The cache is a medium size tablock box with geocaching label. When placed it contained logbook, pencil, sharpener and some swaps.
