Geocache Description:

I was born here and lived for around 18 years in a house nearby. Patea is known for it Freezing Works which was one of the first major works to close in 1982. In 1984 the town shot to fame with the number one hit Poi E by the Patea Maori Club. I lot of Ronald Hugh Morrisons novels were also set in this area (Pallet on the Floor). Don't forget to check out the concrete Aotea canoe in the centre of town. Patea actually means "place where the earth smells sweet". If you are staying for a while there is a great camping ground down towards the beach, and you get to experience a black sand.
