Geocache Description:

FTF: Congratulations to RedRover!!!

The Cache: You are looking for a small container (zip-lock) that holds a log book, and a FTF prize. To get access to this cache you must navigate (boat or kayak) to a small island with an educational hiking trail with public access 24/7. You can do so from Punta Pozuelo in Guayama which is the nearest point, or from Aguirre or either from Salinas. Once you get into the pier, you must follow the trail to the observation tower. There are two short routes (~10 meters) to the Cache once you are at the tower (it is on land not in the water). Enjoy the view at the tower to Boca del Infierno and Cayos Barca. Bring a bag and help doing CITO. Since this is a long trip to the Cache, you may email or call me to check for its reachability. Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR also known as JoBaNERR or JoBaNES) is one of a kind in PR and the Caribbean. There are 28 other NERRs in US. Since 1981 JBNERR has been managing and protecting estuarine resources between Guayama and Salinas towns. With educational, research and monitoring programs we serve the public with interpretive trips and talks. We have coastal resources such dry and mangrove forest (Jagüeyes Forest), reef islands (Caribe Cays, La Barca Cays) and Mar Negro (series of mangrove channels and coastal bays) with a peculiar dark color. This is due to tannins leached from mangrove roots. JBNERR has the highest Antillean manatee densities in PR also bottle nose dolphins use the bay. Cayos Caribes is a system of 17 tear-shaped mangrove islands protected by a coral reef located in Jobos Bay. The principal island is called Cayo Caribe and has a hiking trail that loop the island. It also has a pier. The trail is dedicated to Dra. Clara Mojica (RIP), a friend of mine and former educator at JoBaNERR that passed away due to breast cancer. You may find all 4 different mangrove species, gumbo-limbo tree (Almacigo), seagrasses and many other interesting things. Some History: Jobos Bay was the last battle that Pirate Cofresi fought in 1825. He was attacked by three US vessels while he navigate his sailboat El Mosquito into Boca del Infierno. This is a heavy winds and waves passage between Cayo Caribe and Cayo Barca.
