Geocache Description:

The only difficulty with this one is the hike to get there ... and back. It is another cache situated along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Logan.

Several years ago at the end of a hot-and-dry Cache Valley summer, an langorous raptor leisurely spread his wings ... and instantly discovered the closeness of Logan City's power lines. The resultant short circuit transformed the unfortunate creature into a "bird-torch" which ignited a major conflagration on "our" hill. Fighting that fire was made much more difficult by the presence of "civilization" right up to the "interface" with undeveloped, and tinder dry, "nature," as well as the lack of an access road.

It was not surprising, then, that when, not long afterward, an outdoors group approached Logan City proposing the development of a continuation of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail system through the Logan area, the "powers that be" were remarkably receptive.

But the completion of this segment, now heavily used by recreating folks (but not ... yet ... by firefighters), nearly did not happen. The problem was the presence of a Logan City reservoir at the recently desinated Wilderness Border ... trail construction in a Wilderness is a no-no ... together with the reluctance of some local property owners to allow a right-of-way through their private territory.

Utah's then US Representative James Hansen was the hero. He managed to append an "amendment" to a bill moving through Congress to allow a short segment of the trail to veer up into the Wilderness, before quickly dropping back down on the other side of the "problematic" region. The bill passed, and the rest is happy "history."

I had the chance to converse with that landowner the other day. As we talked about the weather, he happened to mention that he'd opposed the trail at first, but now thought it was a great asset. He walks his dog on it every day! Of interest, it was his home which had been in greatest jeopardy during the fire. Things work out.

And now Logan has the "firebreak" it could have used a few years ago.

Well, all of that having been said ... this cache is located along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail at a point where it has jogged up into the Wilderness, but is on the "reservoir side." There is a cyclone fence around the facility which you do NOT need to enter.

The cache is small and hidden in "Nature." Except for the tree effect on reception, you should have no difficulty finding it. Don't step on any wildflowers. The container has the log and a pencil. Sorry, no more room. After logging in, please replace it at least as meticulously as you found it, thank you very much.
