Geocache Description:

A joint project between Spain and Sweden to mark the strong bonds between our countries created by geocaching.
Greetings to Spain from Sweden !

Spain was mostly known to tourists as sunny beaches, red wine and a cheap stay. Conditions have rapidly changed since the sixtieth where this might have been more true but Spain has left the Franco dictator ship behind and is a full member of the EU since 1986. By replacing the Peseta with the Euro in 2002 the Spanish economy took a further step into European integration.

The country has a history starting 1,2 million years back in time when the peninsula first was populated. Iberians, Celts and Basques were the first invaders followed by Phoenicians and Greeks. The following centuries Carthagians and Romes followed before the muslim armies conquered the territory.

Many more ethnic groups were to follow and in common they all have that they have left traces still visible today. This makes Spain an interesting country to visit due to its very shifting history. Spain had its greatest economic period during the 15th to 17th century a period during which the rest of the world was conquered by the strongest militarian nations at those times.

Tourism is one of the big industries today where there is something for everyone to explore regardless if a sunny beach is the goal or the mighty Alhambra.

Since the sea is an so important part of Spain and its history a cache is put very close to one of the bigger lakes nearby so that Spanish visitors will feel well acquainted with the surroundings. Close to the sea there is also an old mansion today serving as a conference center. Around the lake Aspen are still lots of old grand mansions serving as examples from an economic era where wealth was meant to be very visible.
