Geocache Description:

This year - 2009 - is an exciting year for Bermuda. We are celebrating our 400th Anniversary and many events are being held throughout the year to mark this occasion.
The events subsequent to the wreck of the Sea Venture began the oldest continuous inhabited English settlement in the New World on this small isolated Atlantic Island. There were 140 men, 10 women, some children and a dog on board the ship. All of whom made it safely to the beach presently known as St. Catherine's in St. George. John Rolfe, who later married the legendary Pocohontas, and his first wife were passengers. A little over a month after their shipwreck 8 experienced sailors set off for this original destination -Jamestown, Virginia, in a longboat with the hopes of a resuce off the island. They were never heard from again.
The survivors built two smaller ships so that they could resume their voyage to Jamestown. However, when they reach Virginia they were unprepared for what they saw. There was death and misery. Sixty emaciated survivors crawled out of dilapidated dwellings crying "We are starved". Perhaps as many as 270 people had died and there were tales of cannibalism. The food on board the two ships was a God-send for the Virginians.
This cache is placed at the Unfinished Church in the town of St. George. Construction began in the 1870's. It is a magnificient structure and was meant to replace St. Peter's Church. Folowing a series of problems including parishioner fighting, financial difficulties and a damaging storm, it was abandoned on the eve of it's completion. Today, this picturesque ruins is a protected historic monument and part of St. George's World Heritage site.
The cache is easy to get to and is maintained by a local.
