Op donderdag 10 juli 2008 huldigde Oud-Turnhout drie monumenten in
ter ere van drie Geallieerde bommenwerpers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Ter hoogte van de jagerstraat/Kaeyputtenweg kwam in de nacht van 10 op
11 juli 1941 een Poolse Wellington R1184 bommenwerper neer.
Aan de Lage Mierdse Weg kwamen in de nacht van 22 juni 1944 op hetzelfde
tijdstip en kort bij elkaar twee Britse Lancaster bommenwerpers neer.
In Lancaster LM 115 overleven vier bemanningsleden. Twee ervan slagen er
in om uit Duitse handen te blijven. Eén ervan, Dhr. Maunsell, leeft nog steeds.
De volledige crew van Lancaster ME782 sneuvelt.
Deze drie vliegtuigen hebben toevallig dezelfde regio gebombardeerd:
Keulen en het nabijgelegen Wesseling, waar er zich grote raffinaderijen
van synthetische olie bevinden.
De gesneuvelden liggen naast elkaar begraven op het militaire
kerkhof van de Commonwealth van Schoonselhof in Wilrijk.
De zes Poolse inzittenden van de Wellington kunnen voor de crash
met de parachute landen. Zij belanden allemaal gedurende de rest
van de oorlog in verschillende gevangenkampen en keren na de
bevrijding terug naar Engeland. Nadien zwermen zij uit over gans de
wereld daar ze een terugkeer naar het Polen onder Russische
invloedsfeer niet zien zitten.
Deze cache bevindt zich nabij het monument ter ere van de Poolse
inzittenden van de Poolse Wellington.

On Thursday, July 10, 2008 Oud-Turnhout inaugurated three monuments in
honor of three Allied bombers from the Second World War.
At the Jagerstraat / Kaeyputtenweg in the night of 10 July 11, 1941 a
Polish Wellington bomber R1184 came down. At the Lage Mierdse Weg
in the night of June 22, 1944 at the same time and close to each
other two British Lancaster bombers came down. In the Lancaster LM
115 four crew members survived the crash . Two of them succeed to
remain out of German hands. One of them, Mr.. Maunsell, is still
living. The entire crew of Lancaster ME782 died.
These three aircrafts have accidentally bombed the same area:
Cologne and the nearby Wesseling, where there are large oil refineries off
synthetic oil. The dead are buried side by side at the military
cemetery in the Commonwealth of Schoonselhof in Wilrijk.
The six occupants of the Polish Wellington used their parachutes to survive
the crash. They all end up in differentprison camps and after
the liberation they go back to England. Afterwards they swarm all
over the world as they do not want to return to Poland under the
Russian influence.
