A geocache close to an old, restored lime kiln at the Northern end of Whittle Spinney, a small area of public woodland adjacent to the M61 in Whittle le Woods.
This old lime kiln played an important part in the industrial, agricultural and domestic life of the village in days gone by.
It was probably built at the same time as the Whittle branch of the Leeds to Liverpool canal was constructed.
Lime would be slow burned for 3 - 4 days before being extracted in powdery lumps known as "quick lime". This was used in local industry as a building material, on farmland as fertiliser and in homes as a disinfectant.
The geocache is in woodland close to the lime kiln and a few metres from the path.
Note :- CO couldn't find it on maintenance visit 24 May 2019
. So it was replaced by a small camo pot, hidden as per hint. If anyone finds a small rectangular black box, that's the original container. Please mention it in your log, if you do find the original. Thank you.
