This Aztec shapeshifter was probably the forerunner of the South West Native American coyote. Known as the prankster, god of music, parties, and beer, Huehuecoatl often got caught in his own hi-jinks, but enjoyed the adventure none-the-less banging on his drum and dancing even during the trials.
But this ultimate party animal is also the god most likely to stand over funerals, and it mournful cry there to sing the deceased into the afterlife. It was a very good omen when your loved ones death even made the gods cry out.
