Geocache Description:

It's a nice, leisurely stroll with a very slight elevation decline to get to GZ. And that is where your nice day will come to an abrupt end.

Smiley Face

To claim a smiley for this cache, you must overcome several obstacles. For some it will be extremely easy, for others extremely difficult, and I'm willing to change the rating based on feedback.

The first challenge is to find parking. At the trailhead there's room for two vehicles if they park correctly. Otherwise you will have to park down the street, which will give you a longer walk. Please be very careful when parking near the trailhead, the grass on the North side of the street hides a drop off.

The second obstacle is finding Ground Zero. Because of where it's at, your accuracy could very easily be off more than normal.

Once you have located the cache, the next difficulty to overcome is how to retrieve it. To do this, you will need a particular type of geotool. I can think of at least four different types of devices that well-equipped geocachers might have at their disposal. Generally these tools are left in their vehicle because they are not normally needed.

The last problem to overcome is that this trail, even though at first it may seem to be abandoned, is heavily used by the locals, both two-footed and four.

To have a nice day, you'll find parking right at the trailhead, have a nice stroll to GZ, locate the hiding spot, and using the correct trusty tool you brought with you, will be able to retrieve the cache and sign the log in a very muggle-free environment. If you are unable to locate the hiding spot of the cache or you discover that you are unable to retrieve it, the day is not a total loss. At this point I would encourage you to continue a leisurely stroll further down the established trail. However I would not recommend going off on to the smaller side trails as we found a homeless camp farther back in the woods.

The terrain rating was originally a 1.5 but we increased it to a 2 due to the occasional debris on the trail leading up to and including GZ, and the slope of the hill to get to and from the cache. There is also a narrow opening at the trailhead for pedestrians to walk through to access the trail.

The difficulty is initially set at 3.5 mainly due to the difficulty of spotting and retrieving the cache, but has been lowered to a 2.5 due to so many well-prepared cachers in this area. However, even if you find the cache's resting location, without a proper tool, it will be impossible to retrieve. If the cacher uses a proper device, then retrieval is extremely easy. I do not classify these tools as "special equipment" since it takes no skill or training to operate them, and I have had three of these with me since we first started geocaching.

Please make sure to place the cache back in its frustrating location so others might experience the original challenge.

But most importantly, please remember to:
Have A Nice Day. *

* As of April 4, 2009, it has become optional on
whether you choose to have a nice day or not.

*** Congratulations to Prying Pandora and Plaidguy on a co-FTF and being the first ones to overcome the obstacles and to have a nice day. ***

Update 06/14/2009: Changed both the difficulty and terrain rating based on feedback from the cachers' logs.
