Geocache Description:

Photobucket

Enter at your own risk! Not recommended after dark.
This cemetery always terrified me as a child (remember holding your breath - this one is Loooooooong!)
We were wandering this old cemetery recently and stumbled upon the grave of a person who SIGNED THE TEXAS DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.
Now, if you're not from Texas, you may not know what that is, but if you are from Texas, you sure as heck know it (we have to take 2 years of Texas history in public schools here).
Enjoy my beloved Galveston! Watch out for poison ivy nearby.
This is also the burial place of some who perished during the 1900 storm. You may be surprised that there are so few headstones from September 8, 1900, considering that on that terrible weekend more than 6,000 Islanders died in the most devastating hurricane in American history. Many of the bodies were never recovered, and those that were were hurriedly dumped at sea or burned in giant funeral pyres.
If you are new to Galveston, stop by the Pier 21 Theater (Strand area). The Pier 21 Theater features two theatrical presentations: The Great Storm and The Pirate Island of Jean Lafitte.
The Great Storm is a 27-minute, powerful, multimedia documentary of the greatest disaster in Galveston history, the 1900 hurricane in which an estimated 6,000 people lost their lives. God rest their souls.
