Fort Pike

This cache is placed to celebrate the reopening of historic Fort Pike to the public. The cache is outside of the fenced-in area and it is therefore available 24/7.

Fort Pike began construction in 1818. It guarded the Rigolets Pass in to Lake Pontchartrain, a "back door" route to the city of New Orleans. It was originally constructed to guard against a retaliatory invasion by the British following the War of 1812. It changed hands from US to the Confederacy and back to the US during the Civil War without a single shot being fired. It was decommissioned in 1890.

Fort Pike

The Fort was already decaying before Hurricane Katrina's storm surge completely submerged the structure. The site remained closed for three years for repairs, only to be damaged again by Hurricane Gustave in 2008. The Fort reopened to the public on June 12, 2009.
