Geocache Description:

LLB 1 King o' the Kent, Levens Left Bank One in a series of five caches along Levens Park Avenue This is a simple puzzle/offset cache and is not actually at the stated coordinates above.

As a young Mancunian boy, I can remember watching an appeal on TV to stop the ministry of transport from ploughing a “motorway” through the ancient avenue of trees leading down to Levens Hall in 1968/9 and the local MP Michael Jopling asking for a diversion. The park and the world famous topiary gardens were planned by the famous french landscape designer Monsieur Guillame Beaumont. They were planted during 16 years between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th. This series celebrates the reprieve of this avenue of oaks. Roadside Parking is available near either SW or NE end of the avenue. Refreshments available most days from Levens Hall This route can be linked into a round by also visiting GCT692White Faun on the other bank and your choice of excellent Martlakes caches to include GCXP75 The Safie Series - 6 Don't let it slam! King o’ the Kent This “Throne” seat (I know of at least two others on the park ) is close to the NE entry to the park and looks up river to the bridge carrying the M6 spur (so hotly debated 40 years ago ) over the Kent. The park walls pinch down on the banks and a stout chain and wire hawser hold the suspended river barrier. The cache is NOT here but the real cache site is in view from here. New Puzzle cache details You need to find information from the gate and the new(ish) sign at the NE entrance to the park. There are two gates at the park entrance. The large gate has box-section edges and a number of vertical metal bars along it's length. Count the short (J) and the long (K)bars. The new sign doesn't tell you much about the history of the park but does tell you not to bother a particular type of goat. The number of letters in the name of that goat is L. The sign also has a map;towards the top right hand corner is a numbered road, that number is MNO. East of Levens bridge the map shows the footpath continues to the Cumbria Coastal way; count the green dashes between the road and the arrow - that's P. The final co-ords of the cache are: N 54º (K+L).(J-K)(L+O)(J-P) W 002º (M-O)(L).(M+O)(N-P)(K+O-M) The original puzzle (below) points to the same location, and although the info isn't available on site any more it's still possible with a bit of searching! Two dates were noted on old signs on entry points to the park denoting the start and finish of the laying out of this avenue. Take these dates as ABCD and EFGH The true position of this cache is: N54º GB.ABF W002º D(E+D).BDF
