This is first in a series of caches based upon paranormal activity in the Black Hills area. The government wants you to believe that these events never took place and want to cover up these strange occurrences, but maybe you can uncover the truth. The cache is located off E Hwy 44 on the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. Please leave the letterbox stamp in the cache. You can either park at the gate or take the road. Keep your eyes peeled for the prehistoric creature as he may be hungry.
For several years the nearby Badlands were used for military training exercises and now it is a National Park. In 1938 the US military made an accidental discovery while performing practice bombing runs in the Badlands. One of the bombs missed there intended target and created a large chasm in the earth. Upon investigation of the chasm, a large sink hole was discovered at the bottom which contained various prehistoric skeletons. Some were perfectly preserved in a fossilized black substance. The military called upon world renowned Austrian scientist Henrik Fetterberg to investigate the discovery.
After Fetterberg’s team of archeologists unearthed the fossilized specimens another amazing discovery was made. A perfectly preserved dinosaur egg was encased in the fossilized tar like substance. Fetterberg performed many experiments on this egg and was able to extract DNA samples. Fetterberg was the leading scientist in this field of technology at the time and allot of his experiments were just in the experimental stages, but he finally got the breakthrough he needed. He was able to isolate the DNA and create a living clone of the creature. As soon as the top brass learned of this, the military wanted to use this creature for war purposes, but Fetterberg was against this as he was a man of science. Several months after the creature was created in the laboratory, Fetterberg made a daring escape for freedom with the creature. Military patrols were immediately dispatched in search for the rouge scientist and the creature. Fetterberg was soon spotted in a nearby canyon and in a last desperation attempt he freed the creature and then was immediately captured. For several days the military searched desperately for the creature but it was nowhere to be found. It was reported that the military had imprisoned Fetterberg and wanted him to duplicate the experiment, he refused and was tortured relentlessly. Fetterberg was never to be seen again nor has the creature until now. Sightings of a large green prehistoric creature have been reported in the Cheyenne River valley area along E Hwy 44. Are these recent sightings the work of overactive imaginations or is the legend of Henrik Fetterberg and his scientific experiments true?
Note: If you own a 4X4 there are allot of FS roads in the area to 4X4 on. At the top of the hill is an excellent view of the Cheyenne River valley and the nearby Creston gravel pit operation. Also there are a few old benchmarks in the area on Creston Rd and along E Hwy 44 from Rapid City to Scenic. There was a benchmark (W10) near the parking location, but it has been dug up and stolen, the survey sign is still there though.
