Euchy Gold!! Hmmm! Sounds a bit like an illicit substance from the old hippy days, doesn’t it? Heh! Heh! Heh!
It's not however! – (I just liked the name.)
This cache will bring you to The Battery Dam (as the area is known). It is the site of a nicely preserved industrial complex in the Cragie State Forest, a beautiful Box-Ironback woodland, not far from Maryborough. Its history dates back to the 1850’s Gold Rush. It contains the remnants of quite a substantial gold mining and processing plant that developed over the lifespan of the field. It’s all there, from the myriad of small pits throughout the surrounding bush, to the puddling rings, mullock heaps and the cyanide vats, used to separate out the gold from its host material. Along the track behind the BBQ are the remains of a 3 room stone cottage. Tiny!! Just as well they didn’t have fridges and wide-screen TV. They would have to sleep standing up.
Early last century, when the gold was worked out, the site was converted into a Eucalyptus distillery. The well-preserved remains of that industry are also there to be seen.
The road in is unsealed but good, easily accessible to conventional vehicles. There is ample parking and there are information boards that will explain the set-up to you as you proceed along the formed pathways and tracks to the various features. Take time to explore and wonder. This cache and its nearby neighbour, (Not quite Scotch on the Rocks. - GC1TQN0 ), were not meant to be rushed. Take a picnic. There is a BBQ. Go for a walk. There is a delightful track that will take through the worked landscape to GC1TQN0. It is a pleasant return trip of around 45 mins at a leisurely pace.
The cache is a regular-sized screw-top, plastic container, well hidden from view, but for a small tether, which you will need to unhitch and use to manoeuvre the container from its hiding place. Use feel, not force to avoid damaging the container. (To facilitate extraction, you will probably need to employ an appropriate natural implement. Luckily, there are plenty of these lying around in the vicinity. The same item will probably be needed to replace the cache once found.) The cache contains a logbook and pen, a few swaps and a "Scratchie" for the First to Find.
The signal can sometimes become a bit fuzzy as you draw close to your target, but you will probably have identified it by the time that happens. If it's too bad, the first hint should help.
When replacing the cache, please ensure it is suitably out of sight, with the tether reattached and accessible to the next searcher.
