Geocache Description:

The "Restin'" caches are a series that will take you to cemeteries - places of historical interest. From pioneers and modern people these places are full of interesting information. Take your time - walk around, visit with the past. Please respect where you are.

The little cemetery at Coldwell lies half way down the hill between the railway and the lake. A tall granite shaft bears the inscription:
Sacred to the memory of
R.G. Coldwell, C.E. 1860 – 1940
After whom this place was named in 1884.

“Robert Coldwell was a young Scottish engineer who was responsible for blasting the rock wall and laying the road bed for this section of the Canadian Pacific Railway. After many ears in Canada, Coldwell returned to Scotland to live the balance of his life on a pension. On the day of his death, a cable arrived from his relatives, addressed to the Mayor of Coldwell announcing that the deceased’s last expressed wish was that he be buried in the town that had been named for him. Would the Mayor be kind enough to make the arrangements?

Arrangements were made, and on the day of the funeral several railway officials arrived from Montreal to pay the company’s last respects to the Scottish lad who had been one of the young adventurers who helped forge the railway through the rugged Canadian Shield.”

Coldwell never did develop into a town, but became a busy fishing village that at one time had a population of about 200 with 25 families, several businesses, a church and a school.
