Geocache Description:

Hub City History

Limon, Colorado has its roots in the railroad.  In 1888, Limon got its start as a work camp for the new Chicago and Rock Island rail line (part of the the CRIP line if you play Rail Baron board game), destined to run from Kansas to Colorado Springs. Limon was named after one of the railroad's original construction foreman.

This cache will take you for a short walk though the outdoor exhibits and park of the town's railroad and frontier museum area.  All of the answers are found outdoors among the exhibits so you can do this even when the nearby museums are closed.  You'll be looking at exhibits to find the answers to the missing parts of these coordinates to find the final cache location: N 39*15.BAC W 103*41.DEF

To start off, parking is available at the published cache coordinates: N39*15.657 W103*41.148

A) Note the first number of the address on the "Exhibit Building" sign where you parked.  Take away 1 from that first digit for the value of "A".

If the Exhibit Building is open have a look inside.  Otherwise walk past the statue and down the ramp towards the farm equipment and railroad exhibits.

B) As you walk along you'll see a railroad exhibit of a brown snow plow engine (it used to be silver with different numbers and there were two yellow passenger cars and one blue passenger car attached).  What is the first digit of the serial number on the side of the brown snow plow engine minus 3?

Turn west (to your right) facing the Depot Building and a red fuel truck in the distance and walk on the road between the train mentioned above and the various historical farm equipment.  Aim towards the Depot Building.

C) On the side of the Depot Building facing you is a red door and above it a sign with the elevation of Limon.  Note the second and third digits (5 _ _ 6)?  Add them together to get the value of C.

F) In this same area is a restored yellow Union Pacific caboose.  On the side closest to you is an exhibit of several railroad warning signs.  One is a standard flashing red railroad crossing signal used to warn cars.  The sign on it reads, "EXEMPT" and below that, how many tracks?  Subtract that number from "C" above to get the value for "F".

Walk around the front of the Depot Building towards the red fuel truck.

D) On the Depot Building is a sign advertising the "Twilight Limited Train Rides" that were available several years ago.  These were short train rides with dinner and live musical entertainment.  Including the beginning and ending years, for how many years was this service available?  This is not a subtraction problem. :-)

If the Depot Museum building is open (Memorial Day to Labor Day) have a look inside.  They have a neat model train exhibit and arrowhead collection.  Otherwise, continue walking west around the red fuel truck you saw earlier and towards the School House and playground/park beyond.

E) Last one.  For the original cache location you had to count the windmills.  Interesting to look at since they are all a little different.  For the new cache location find the metal train kids can play on near the street and count the small wheels on one side.  Divide that number by 2 for the value of "E".

That's it.  Using the above answers plug in the missing parts of the coordinates and go find that cache.  You might already be there.

The cache is located on site at: N 39*15.ABC W 103*41.DEF

Checksum: N 39 W 22
