In an effort to bring more caches to this area, the Eastwood Area
Cache Series is being started. These are caches that are either “in
or close to” the Eastwood School District area. These caches will
highlight important places with historical reference, cemeteries,
or places that were just important while growing up. Have fun.
Welcome to Metzgar Cemetery. A nice little cemetery in an out of the way spot. This cemetery lies in both Scott and Jackson Townships. In talking with local historians and one of the cemetery workers, this is what I found out. The William Vernon family were the first purchasers of this property in the 1820's. After that, the land was sold to J. Cessna and he in turn sold it in 1847 to Joseph Metzgar. Joseph Metzgar and his family were one of the early settlers of the township. This is where the cemetery name came from. Members of the Vernon family were the first to be interred here in 1829 when they were afflicted with some kind of sickness and passed away. There are no markers for this family. The original deed for this property is dated September 1830 to William Vernon from the United States Government. The Vernon family eventually moved west and when they sold the land to J. Cessna in 1842, one acre was set aside for a public burying ground.
The original “Old Part” of the cemetery lies on the sand hill with many of the headstones dating back to the 1830’s.
On to the cache. You are searching for a 35mm film canister with only room for a log so please bring a writing tool. FTF gets a crisp George Washington. (Well, maybe not crisp but it's in there.) Happy Hunting
The "SQ" in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project by the Northwest Ohio Geocachers to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. This cache is part of that series created by NWOGEO members to highlight cemeteries or memorial gardens in the area. Please be respectful of the area, and observe their rules and posted hours which are typically sunrise to sunset.
