This was a siding and water point for the old Ghan Railway Line.
The section of track from Marree to Oodnadatta was opened in 1891,
eventually being extended to Alice Springs in 1929. During World
War II in the 1940's train frequency soared from 3 trains per week
to 56 trains per week.
The name Curdimurka came from an Aboriginal word 'Kadimakara';
referring to monsters which lived in the Lake Eyre region.
The last train passed through here at the end of 1980.
Enthusiasts from the Ghan Railway Preservation Society have
taken on the task of restoring the Ghan sidings. To raise the
necessary funds for this project they decided to hold a bi-annual
ball at the Curdimurka siding. The first ball, in 1986 was attended
by a few hundred people, mainly from Adelaide and from the stations
and towns in the vicinity. The container contains a log book and
small swaps.
