The nature trail is a half-mile dirt path that goes between the Upper Falls parking lot and the gorge. There are typically a few muddy spots. Cache is located along the nature trail.
**PLEASE HIDE IT WELL WHEN PUTTING IT BACK, this cache gets messed with if exposed**
The Upper Falls nature trail runs through an old-growth forest filled with mature sugar maple and scattered yellow birch trees. A few American beech trees still stand, but most have succumbed to the exotic beech bark disease. The white, wooly coating on the tree's bark is a sign the tree is infested with the small insect. Many of the larger infected trees were cut down to keep visitors safe from falling limbs.
There are over a dozen fern species represented at Tahquamenon, including the grove of New York fern near the cache site. This is one of the largest patches of New York fern in Michigan, creating excellent cover for small critters and a beautiful photo op for humans!
