Bellissimo panorama sul Mendrisiotto e sulla Lombardia.
Un'ora e 15 minuti per salire di 465 metri di dislivello.
Mulattiera non asfaltata.

Per raggiungere il Caviano vi sono diverse possibilità.
La più conosciuta è quella di salire a piedi da Obino, frazione di Castel San Pietro. Attraversato il nucleo di Obino, entrando di fronte al parcheggio, si passa nei pressi della chiesetta di Obino, bel punto panoramico.
La strada, asfaltata fino a questo momento, diventa una mulattiera di acciottolato con una pendenza regolare circa del 15% per 3 km.
Dai 500 metri di altitudine si raggiunge il caviano a 965 metri in circa un'ora e 15 minuti.
La salita ha 6 tornanti. Dal sesto la strada spiana e dopo 200 metri si arriva al Caviano.
L'auto può essere lasciata al parcheggio a Obino. Con i mezzi pubblici si può arrivare alla stazione di Mendrisio, sulla linea Milano - San Gottardo, e poi con l'autopostale salire a Castel San Pietro e quindi a Obino (a piedi dalla fermata di Castel San Pietro a Obino occorrono una decina di minuti).
Una seconda possibilità è il sentiro che sale partendo da Monte (680 msm). Si può parcheggiare sotto il ristorante Montanara nei parcheggi pubblici. Dal centro del paese si seguono le indicazioni per Caviano.
Si tratta di un sentiero meno frequentato rispetto al percorso precedente. Questo sentiero si congiunge con la mulattiera 200 metri prima dell'arrivo, quando ormai tutto il dislivello è stato colmato.
Giunti al Caviano non vi è alcuna possibilità di ristoro. Fontane ve ne sono solo vicino all'abitato, sul resto della salita non v'è nulla per cui consigliamo vivamente di partire con una sufficiente scorta di liquidi .
Dal Caviano si può proseguire sulla medesima mulattiera dove si trovano due agriturismo e due ristoranti. Per raggiungerli occorre calcolare ancora un'ora di cammino. Dal Caviano in poi la salita non è più così impegnativa e vi sono bei tratti pianeggianti con vista sui villaggi della Valle di Muggio e sul Monte Generoso.
Per chi si sposta con i mezzi di trasporto pubblici una bella escursione può essere fatta continuando fino alla Bellavista (2 ore) e scendere poi a Capolago (stazione FFS) con il trenino del Monte Generoso.
