Geocache Description:

Easy terrain, possibly a bit tricky so the 2.5 rating.

Our hats are off to the people that work on roads and the infrastructure that enable us to move so easily and safely from cache to cache and on. The cache container is hidden in plain view in an area that would be difficult to pass without those structures. We worked so the coordinates should place you right there - there may be a heat/canyon effect on really hot days. It is placed in one of our favorite areas to drive through. There is no room for swag or a writing utensil so please bring your own. Please note. This is not your average guard rail cache (not a magnetic container or film canister). History and Fun Fluff: This area of Randolph County had gold mines, stills, and racing. Before the California gold rush North Carolina produced most of the gold being mined in the U.S., and Randolph County was the highest producer in the state. As many of you will know NASCAR brought a new form of gold and prosperity to this part of North Carolina. The Petty family, the Labontes, and other famous racing drivers got their starts in this area and still live within 15 miles of this cache In fact, the Caraway Race Track is at the bottom of this hill (another side) and can be heard easily (LOUDLY) from this spot on weekends. Caraway is one of the four tallest remaining mountains (hills) in the Uwharrie chain. This chain is one of the oldest in the world. In its heyday it may have been higher than the Himalayas. Now there’s a thought to cause some pause. The chain is also responsible for the more temperate weather experienced by residents of Randolph County: generally less snow, a few degrees warmer in winter, and less severe weather than points West and North. The worst weather often moves around the Uwharries, following the I-85 corridor. Environmental cautions: There are poison plants, ticks, briers, spiders, revenuers and other possible hazards nearby but these should be of little concern for cachers in this case. Rural highway traffic will be more of a concern. In any case, please exercise caution and use stealth as necessary when searching around this area. Finally, please replace the cache snuggly just as you found it so the next cacher can enjoy the same level of fun and challenge in finding it (and so the cache will be dry). Congratulations to FTF - GLSBike!!
