The Fruit Belt Line Traditional Cache
Gma F: This makes me very sad! The trail is so beautiful and peaceful! I had several caches along the Fruit Belt Line trail, but new chains and Private Property No Trespassing Signs have been posted at the 6th Street entrance to the trail. I felt I had to honor these signs by archiving my caches.

This cache memorializes one of the many railroads that connected
Michigan towns before the advent of the automobile and paved roads.
It was first organized in 1866-67 as the Toledo and South Haven
Railroad. Despite the high sounding name, it actually was opened to
traffic in 1877 with only nine miles of narrow-gauge track
connecting Paw Paw and Lawrence. Over the years, ownership of the
railroad changed several times and all the trackage was converted
to standard gauge. In 1905 a new company was formed to create an
electric interurban line between Kalamazoo and South Haven. The new
line was ambitiously called the “Kalamazoo, Lake Shore and Chicago
Railroad.” It operated from 1906 to 1916, but was never
electrified. The line was popularly known as the “Fruit Belt Line,”
and connected Kalamazoo, Oshtemo, Mattawan, Lawton, Paw Paw,
Lawrence, Hartford, Covert, and South Haven.
