Carthage Route 66 Series: Buy the Brooklyn Bridge? Traditional Cache
DareGuy: Sadly the Buy the Brooklyn Bridge Cache is gone. I was wandering around replacing logs in my caches today, and was surprised to find the entire area where this cache had been was leveled. No trees, no cache, just nice leveled ground. I will see if I can place a new cache somewhere nearby unless somebody else beats me to it.

Located on Route 66 off of US 71 (don’t park on 71 or on the ramps, take the exit). Wide shoulders on the outer road should provide ample parking, but as always, use good judgment and stay safe. You are looking for a waterproof container about the size of a 35 mm canister. Moderate bushwhacking required. Not for people who have difficulty with slopes or loose terrain. Unlikely you will have muggle issues. Bugs should be expected (see below).
As a youth, I rode with my family from Joplin to Carthage many times to visit extended family. One of the landmarks I watched for to determine whether we were ‘there yet” was the Brooklyn Heights exit. Brooklyn Heights is a nice, small community that lies a few miles to the west of Carthage. Nearby points of interest include:
-‘The 66 Drive-In’, one of only a handful of drive-in theaters still in operation on The Mother Road across our Country;
-The headquarters of Leggett & Platt, a mattress and cushion factory with long history in our area that earned Carthage the moniker ‘Bedspring Capital of the World’.
Regarding the name of this cache...
Having been a fan of Bugs Bunny in my youth (who am I kidding, I still love Bugs!), I enjoyed the occasional cartoon. The location of this cache reminded me of the classic cartoon “Bowery Bugs”, in which our hero offered to sell New York’s Brooklyn Bridge to a gullible tourist. After telling a fanciful tale of why and how Steve Brodie jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge our tourist said, “"I'll buy it!" and hands Bugs some money.
In the spirit of that rascally rabbit, I am now offering you a cache which is located:
“B(u)y the Brooklyn (Heights) Bridge”
How about you…will you buy it?
Enjoy.
Bring your own pencil.
Congratulations to TomKat87 for FTF!
