Night at the Museum Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Vertighost: Cache owner (CO) has not responded and, as there's been no cache to find for for an extended period of time, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. In general, caches that have been archived due to maintenance issues or lack of cache owner communication are not eligible to be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

Roadside cache with parking. Cache is a concealed rubbermaid container. Cache is NOT inside museum, but certainly come back when it is open and absorb the history of the area. Please be respectful of the antiques. Includes a Dairy Queen treat for the FTF.

You are standing in the area that in 1848 became the city of Yorktown. Yorktown was a mid point between Indianola and New Braunfels and San Antonio. The route through Yorktown saved 20 miles. The creek gave the people needed water. Yorktown was built exactly like the "commons" of New England with a large meadow next to the creek. That meadow has now become the center of all activity since it is the city park.

This building was built for business by Charles Eckhardt. Inside the building is a cistern where water was stored. Should any danger come their way, the people of Yorktown could seal themselves behind the sandstone walls and iron windows and doors. There they had water from the cistern and stored supplies. No record shows that it was ever needed for such; however, one story has it that after the Civil War some Yankee Soldiers came to the home of Mrs. Eckhardt and wanted the key to the store. She quickly grabbed her mattresses made of tree moss and started shaking them wildly. The soldiers were last seen behind a choking dust from the mattresses forgetting totally about the key and getting into the store.

The cache is hidden inside a historic piece of equipment which is what the Yorktown Historical Museum is all about.
