Geocache Description:

Livingstone Cottage is where David Livingstone lived in 1857. The cottage is located at N 51 39.648 W000 11.799

David Livingstone 1813-1873 was reportedly the the first European to see Victoria Fall in Zimabee " The Smoke that thunders" In 1857, David Livingstone was on his first visit home after sixteen years in Africa and found himself the centre of much attention and acclaim. To find some peace and also write a book of his travels, he took a house overlooking Hadley Green. During breaks in his writing he would take walks with his children in Hadley Wood, playing hide-and-seek among the trees as if it was the African jungle. William Garden Blaikie wrote his book "The Personal Life Of David Livingstone" that some of his children still remember his walks and romps with them in the Barnet woods, near which they lived part of the time--how he would suddenly plunge into the ferny thicket, and set them looking for him, as people looked for him afterward when he disappeared in Africa, coming out all at once at some unexpected corner of the thicket There is a badge for the first to find.
