DareGuy: Had a friend tell me this one is gone. Confirmed it was removed by muggles, again.

Going to have to archive this cache. Thanks to everyone who left positive comments and kudos.

Geocache Description:

This cache replaces an archived cache which had been located nearby. No bushwhacking required, you can park within 30' of the cache, & I believe it is handicap accessible. This is a micro cache about 35mm size with no swag. There are various outbuildings but you will not need to enter a building to get the cache. Gates enclose the park, but I have never seen all of them closed. This can be a very active area, be stealthy. The park is closed midnight to one-half hour prior to sunrise.

Second in a series dedicated to the Carthage Parks, Fair Acres is a large and beautifully maintained multi-function park. The Carthage Fair Acres Family Y is housed just west of the park, and leases many of the fields here. Here at Fair Acres you will find softball and hardball fields for all ages and soccer fields for a range of skill levels. A paved walking trail, with exercise station stops, circles the complex. The complex falls under the shadow of Carthage’s south water tower, beautifully decorated with images of maple leaves and the Jasper County Courthouse. Just east of the Fair Acres complex, you will see the new Carthage Senior High School, completed in March 2009. Future plans for Fair Acres include a ramp area to be built somewhere in this park complex for the entertainment of skaters and skateboarders.

Before this park was created, Fair Acres had a varied history. Originally, a large three story marble structure stood in the field just south of the current Family Y structure. Known as the Jasper County Alms house, the building served as Jasper County’s “Poor Farm”, taking in local suffering and penniless families. In the years that followed the closure of the poor farm, the building served a period as a nursing home. For a time after the nursing home closed, the structure stood empty, coming to life every autumn as one of the areas favorite spook houses. Ultimately the structure was razed, leaving only one structure which was part of the old Fair Acres. An old marble outbuilding which appears to have served as storage for its electrical switch panels still remains just east of where the once impressive Alms House stood.

The cache was placed with the kind permission of the Carthage Parks Director, Mr. Bull.

Congratulations to TomKat87 for FTF!
