The Bermuda Railway was a 21.7 mile line that operated for 17 years. Construction began in 1926 and was not completed until 1931. It was said to have been one of the most expensive railroads built at a cost-per-mile of two million dollars.
Construction and maintenance proved to be exceedingly costly as the Railway was built along a coastal route to minimize the amount of land acquisition needed for the right-of-way. More than 10% of the line was elevated on 33 separate structures of timber or steel construction, with extensive trestles and bridgework spanning the ocean. This, along with the introducation of private automobiles to the island after World War II, doomed this once popular line. In 1948 the Railway came to an end and was sold to British Guiana where they continued to run it for several years.
In 1984, 18 miles of former railoroad right-of-way were dedicated as the Bermuda Railway Trail for hiking, and on some portions, biking.
This cache is placed on this Trail. It is accessible from Middle Road in Southampton with parking close to GZ.
