Roughlock Falls is located off Hwy 14A in Spearfish Canyon on Roughlock Falls Road. This is located between Latchstring Restaurant and Spearfish Canyon Lodge. Roughlock Falls can be accessed by the Roughlock Falls Trailhead or by the parking area at Roughlock Falls. After turning on Roughlock Falls road the trailhead is located on the left hand side of the road. One can also get to Roughlock Falls from the main parking area about a mile up the road.
The water feeding Roughlock Falls flows into Spearfish Canyon from Little Spearfish Creek. The limestone cliffs surrounding the falls give the area a magnificent appearance. In the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 the Division of Parks and Recreation made some great improvements to the Roughock Falls Nature Area. They improved the trail system and the different viewing positions to see the falls. There is more parking and new bridges, picnic tables and restrooms were made. There are many interpretive signs along the trail and trailhead. The cache is located on the trailhead fairly close to the path. While hiding the cache many muggles passed by. Be aware that during the summer months this trailhead may be very busy at times. Please use stealth and hide the cache after finding it. If one takes the trailhead it is a one mile hike to the falls. If one starts from the falls area parking the walk isn't long but a steep one when coming back to the car. Either way the walk is a nice one that can be enjoyed by all who can do the walk. Little Spearfish Creek provides some opportunities for fishing. Brown and brook trout can be found from the lower trailhead to the bridge below the falls. Also, Roughlock Falls is one of the few places in the Black Hills to observe the rare American Dipper bird. The American Dipper can walk and swim under the water. Please note that the road from Savoy to Roughlock Falls is closed from December 1st through March 31st. At these times it is a snowmobile trail. The trailhead is open year round but maybe a treacherous walk with snow and ice during the winter months. At these times you use the trailhead at your own risk.
