[ITA] L'Abbazia di Santa Maria di
Cerrate, situata sulla strada provinciale che collega
Squinzano a
Casalabate, fu costruita nel XI secolo.
L'area in cui sorge l'Abbazia di Cerrate, fu acquisita dalla
provincia di Lecce nel 1965, e venne destinata a sede del museo e
del centro di ricerche e studi di folklore e tradizioni popolari
salentine.
Esterno - La chiesa romanica ha un prospetto
monocuspidale animato da una serie di archetti che fa comprendere
la spartizione interna della struttura. La facciata presenta un
piccolo rosone al centro, una
monofora per lato e un duecentesco portale nel
cui intradosso son figurati i rilievi
dell'Annunciazione della Vergine, della Visita a Santa
Elisabetta, dei Magi e del Bagno di Cristo.
Lungo il lato sinistro del tempio, fa bella mostra di se un
portico, risalente al XIII secolo, impreziosito da colonne
cilindriche e poligonali che reggono dei capitelli figurati.
Interno - L'interno è a tre navate ed è
coperto da un soffitto costituito da travi, canne e tegole. Del
1269 è il baldacchino posto sopra l'altare maggiore. Di notevole
interesse sono gli affreschi duecenteschi e trecenteschi: nelle
absidi (Cristo in gloria, Angeli e
Santi); nei sottarchi (Santi), lungo le pareti
(Vergine col Bambino e Santi). Durante i lavori
di restauro furono staccati dalla chiesa alcuni affreschi e
trasportati nel vicino museo nel quale sono tuttora esposti:
(Dormitio Virginis, Annunciazione della Vergine,
Miracolo della cerva, San Giorgio con la
principessa, Sant'Anna e San Gioacchino con Maria
Vergine, San Demetrio, San Michele e altri
Santi).

ACCESSO L'abbazia (e ovviamente il cache) è accessibile
tutti i giorni dalle ore 9:30 alle 13:30 e dalle ore 14:30 alle
19:30.

presidiato da un custode, perciò siate molto circospetti quando

[ENG] The Abbey of Santa Maria di
Cerrate, located on the main road that connects Squinzano
to Casalabate was built in XI century. The area in which stands the
Abbey of Cerrate, was bought by the province of Lecce in
1965, and was home to the museum and center of research and study
of Salento's folklore and popular traditions.
Outside - The Roman church has a monocuspidal
prospectus inspired by a series of arches which shows the partition
of internal structure. The facade has a small rose window in the
middle, a monophora for single hand and a portal of thirteenth
century in which are reliefs of the Virgin at the
Annunciation, the Visit to St. Elizabeth, of
Magi and the Bath of the Christ. Along the left
side of the temple there's a beautiful porch, dating from the
thirteenth century, embellished with cylindrical and polygonal
columns that hold figured capitals.
Inside - The inside has three naves and is
covered by a ceiling made up of beams, pipes and tiles. Of 1269 is
the canopy above the altar. Of great interest are the thirteenth
century and fourteenth-century frescoes: the apses (Christ in
Glory, Angels and Saints), in subarches (Saints),
along the walls (the Virgin and Child with Saints). During
the restoration of the church some frescoes were removed and
transported in the nearby museum which are still exposed:
