Geocache Description:

Old Southampton requires you to visit several closely located old buildings on paved paths that are generally fairly level. Wheelchair suitable throughout although one or two kerbs might require slight detour for a wheelchair. Actual cache is wheelchair accessible.

This cache is designed to complement Southampton City Walls
Cache (GCXDGG)

You can use the same car park or the more expensive East Street Car Park at N 50 54.042 W 001 24.143

Many visitors to Southampton fail to see this part of the City which has some fine old buildings amongst the new.

All the buildings and the cache are within a few hundred yards of each other and you can visit all the locations within 20 minutes once you know where you’re going .  If you have more time please go into some of the buildings and get a feel for the old City!

You will not need to visit all these buildings to derive the coordinates, but I’ll leave it to you to decide which you really do need!

1/. N50° 53.978 W01° 24.360 The Tudor House Museum from C.1495

2/. N50° 53.979 W01° 24.219 Holy Rood Church C.1320 damaged by fire in 1837 and by bombing in 1940, now a Merchant Seamen Memorial.

3/. N50° 53.978 W01° 24.320 St Michael’s Church C.1070 reputed to be the oldest building in the City.

4/. N50° 53.920 W01° 24.358 The Duke of Wellington P.H. recorded in 1237 and still serving!

5/. N50° 53.913 W01° 24.312 Medieval Merchant’s House C.1290.

6/. N50° 53.931 W01° 24.413 Tudor Merchants Hall 15th century timber framed building originally stood in St Michael's Square.

The cache is a small clip/lock box with a logbook and room for the odd Geocoin but please bring your own writing implement! Treat the Site with CARE & Beware of Muggles as the site is visible from several directions!

Here are a few notes to help you find the final coordinates:

Alderman Edward Exton paid AE Marks

The French attacked the Duke of Wellington in 13DW

The number of Mediaeval Merchant's Stop Valves in the Road = SV

If mental arithmetic is not your strong point then you may well need to take some means of calculating with you as you wander through old Southampton to discover the information you will need to find the cache which is at:

North (TS+WF)° (WJ+GD). (GB*(AE+EL))+SV
West (TS-CT)° (((WM+WF+JG)*CE*GB)+HB+JB+WJ+GB+CE)/((WO+GM)*AE)

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

Good Hunting!
