Gateway Downs in Holly operated from 1965 to approximately 1995 as a horse track. It is a half mile oval and in its day was one of Colorado's longest in days raced per year. Local hero Donald Pettinger rode in the Kentucky Derby in 1989 after racing on Gateway Downs. The locals would volunteer to run almost the entire race day events. Teachers and postal workers and others along with traditional ranching background volunteers would also work the event making it a community town backed event. But as was the case with other live horse racing venues it succombed to more expenses and smaller attendances brought on by off track betting and other challenges not in their control and ceased operations in 1995. The track is kept up by the local saddle club today.
