[ENG] At the beginning of the 20th century, the brother of George Armitstead, the mayor of Riga, purchased Veckārķi Manor and decided to build a luxurious palace where he could spend his summers, host guests, and organize lavish celebrations. The palace was constructed between 1911 and 1913, making it the youngest castle in Latvia. Builders from across the region, from Rūjiena to Valka and even farther, took part in its construction. The palace was designed to contain 100 rooms, although the last floor was never completed, as the governor at the time threatened to impose a heavy tax. The building was constructed according to the grand architectural design of Otto Wildau. It is difficult to believe that the construction work was led by Ansis Stupelis, the son of a servant, who had received only five months of formal schooling.
Until just a few years ago, the palace was still inhabited, but today the building is completely abandoned.
