Geocache Description:

Something Fishy This Way Cometh....

This is a red herring RedHerring . This is not. TheLarch

A red herring is an idiomatic expression which is used to divert the audience from the truth or an item of significance.

In a literal sense, there is not such fish species as a "red herring" rather it refers to a particularly strong kipper
that has been strongly
cured in brine and/or heavily smoked.

The idiom has been thought to orginate from a supposed technique of training young scent hounds. The pungent red herring would be dragged along a trail until a puppy learned to follow the scent. Another etymology points to convicts trying to evade hounds by throwing the smelly red herrings to throw off the hounds in pursuit.

The Idiom probably orginates from an 1807 article by William Cobbett where he critised the English press which had
mistakenly reported Napoleon's defeat. He recounted that he had onced used the fish to deflect hounds in pursuit of a hare and added "It was a mere transitory effect of the political red-herring ; for, on the Saturday, the scent became as cold as a stone." . Cobbett repeated this story in 1833 so many times, it was enough to get the figurative sense of a red herring into the minds of his readers, unfortunately it also planted the idea that it came from some real practice of huntsmen.

A
"red herring" is an answer, give in reply to a question, that goes beyond an innocent logical irrelevance. It is a deliberate attempt to divert a process of enquiry.

Now that you have a better understanding of what a red herring is really used for it is now up to you to determine what the red herring is for this cache.
