Geocache Description:

The 1.5 for difficulty is because it is a highly muggle worthy spot. Discretion is required. Ownpen/pencil needed. Swaps are not possible. There is plenty of parking in the area. When you have finished the cache why not visit the excellent Pike and Eel on the banks of the River Great Ouse.

The village ‘ lock up’ was built in 1838 and is situated in the centre of Needingworth near the war memorial.

Village lock ups are historic buildings that were used in rural areas for the temporary detention of people. They were often used for the confinement of drunks who were usually released the next day or to hold people being brought before the local magistrate. A village lock up can either be round or polygonal in plan with minor variations in design, materials and appearance. A typical lock up is a small structure with a single door and narrow slit window or opening. Most feature a spire or dome shaped roof (though this one is sloping) and are commonly built from brick, stone or timber.

The majority of surviving lock-ups date from the 18th and 19th centuries when rural communities struggled to police thefts, burglaries, shootings, drunkenness, the obstruction of watchmen and the stealing of livestock. So nothing has changed then!

The village lock- up fell out of use when the County Police Act was introduced in 1839 and local police stations were built with their own holding facilities. During World War 11 many lock-ups were used by the Home Guard as sentry posts or places for storing arms. In recent years a number of village lock-ups have been restored and graded as listed buildings. There are lock ups all over the country but in Cambridgeshire they are to be found in Broughton, Eaton Socon and Fenstanton as well as Needingworth.
