Driving north out of Walhalla, the road is fairly straight and level until this point... then it quickly curves to the right as you enter the first foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The first couple times I drove this route, the sudden change in terrain caught me off guard. I later realized that this is the first (or last) mountain view looking down into the Piedmont from Highway 28. Sure, there may be greater views farther to the north as the road climbs to higher elevations, but this is the first one you come to.
This is a quick cache at a good place to stop before you take on those mountain curves, or if you are heading south, at the last stop before leaving the mountains. From here, highway 28 continues into Georgia, where it becomes GA state highway 28 and continues into downtown Augusta. If you follow the road north, it becomes NC 28 at the state line and winds it's way upward toward Highlands, eventually ending within half a mile of the Tennessee state line.
