Geocache Description:

Starting at Beautiful View #2, you enter a cool green forest (green in the summer at least). Three parallel routes will take you to the cache:

Option #1: Follows the course of the Rivanna River. You will see green RTF blazes along this trail. This is mountain bikeable if you are careful. Most of it is a brand new trail and has some roots and bumps here and there. You will get several views of the river and you can go down to the shore at several points. The river is rather pristine here. Be sure to take time to enjoy it. It is about 0.75 miles along this trail to the cache.

Option #2: Follows an old dirt road. This is the straightest route, but the least appealing. There are many muddy puddles along he way. It is about 0.45 miles along this trail to the cache.

Option #3: Follows the brown-blazed RTF alternate trail. This trail heads up into the hills to the left of the muddy road. It is mountain bikeable with a couple of steep, but smooth hills.

Trails #1 and trails #3 rejoin the muddy road just short of a major railroad overpass. Public access stops short of the bridge, so please don’t go any farther than the sign marking the end of the trail. Be mindful of poison ivy.

Original items: Flashlight, “soccer ball”, and a noisemaker.

About the Rivanna Trails Foundation (RTF)…

The mission of the RTF is to create and protect non-motorized pathways, which follow the Rivanna River and its tributaries. The RTF was formed in 1992 to develop a network of walking trails that would encircle the City of Charlottesville, VA and extend into Albemarle County to connect with existing trails and historic sites. Initially adopting Appalachian Trail standards, the trails have traditionally been primarily rustic pedestrian paths that emphasized natural routes and the preservation of flora and fauna. The RTF completed a 20-mile loop and is now extending outwards to connect the loop with other neighborhoods and areas of natural beauty. The River North Trail along which these three geocaches are placed is one of those new trails.

The RTF is an entirely volunteer organization and works closely with others such as the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation, the Charlottesville Albemarle Mountain Bike Club, the Rivanna Conservation Society, as well as the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
