At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year
on earth.
Up to two of these being total eclipses.
Total solar eclipses are rare at any location.
This is due to the relatively tiny area of the moons surface.
During the 20th century,between
1901 and
2000 there was 71 total. eclipses
worldwide alone.
New Zealanders will have to wait until 22 July
2028.
This will be our next total
eclipse.
The eclipse will be best viewed in Dunedin and
will occur about 4.15
pm.
Unfortunately the sun will
only be about 8 degrees above the horizon and viewing dependant on
the weather.
New Zealand has shared in some full solar eclipses.
