Our family thought it would be great to explore the Newman Lake area. We each chose different areas to place a cache and give some history on the nearby area (the cache may not be located exactly as the history states but is close to the original location). Please enjoy the series: remember to bring a writing utensil, there is some geo swag, and as always feel free to CITO.
Congratulations to LLCOOL for FTF !
NEWMAN LAKE HISTORY TOUR 36 - DAY HOTEL
Jim Day came to Spokane from Indiana in 1883 looking for property to homestead. In 1884 he found land on the west side of Newman Lake was partially hilly and also bordered the lake. He started clearing the land in 1885, but the lower field would flood and in 1886 a meeting was called to form a corporation designated to digging a ditch to drain the fields, and even then there was still problems with high water in the spring. Jim married Lillie Wendler in 1907 and moved into the big house Jim had built on the bluff overlooking the lake and opened the Day Motel.
Guest would ride the great Northern train to Moab, then coached to the hotel. Jim built a long wooden walkway over the mud and swampy water out to the deeper part of the lake, where the dock had several row boats and you could fish or swim. The Day’s ran the motel from 1907 until 1916. In 1920 they sold to the Wallace family and moved near Honeymoon Bay.
Lillie died at the age of 54 after the family was in a car accident in Otis area. In April of 1949 Jim died. The boys, Willard and John both served in World War II and later both died of cancer. They also had a daughter Ester.
The Day place was still standing in the late 50's as a farmhouse. But, today it is history.
