Placed by and named for Maxine Matthes Maren and Piper, 4 little girls and and their official geocaching "poking sticks".
Horseshoe lake is a beautiful hiking spot in the Mammoth lakes region at the base of the Mammoth Crest. Volcanic emissions of CO2 from teh soil have converted one area into a lunar landscape, while the rest of the lake is ringed by beuatiful high Sierra forest.
The cache is near an old foundation and chimney left over from what we were told is an old boys' club camp. The trail is wide and flat, and accommodates hiking, biking, (with kid trailers), baby joggers, etc. The lakeshore behind the chimney is a great spot for rock tossing and stone skipping.
The cache is an ammo can with LOTS of room in it. It started out with the following items:
