Geocache Description:

A simple puzzle cache in Makerston Street

The cache is NOT at the listed co-ordinates.

To find the cache you will need to walk from one end of Makerston Street to the other to visit some historically interesting spots. They can be done in any order and there are popular coffee vendors near 2 of spots.

Makerston Street can be very busy as the headquarters of the Queensland Police Service is on the corner of Makerston Street and Roma Street.

For an additional hint at GZ, collect three letters as noted below at waypoints BUS, ARL and Ludwig to be used in this order.

Starting at the river end of Makerston St, at waypoint Oxley (see GC1NA5D (now archived post G20) for more details), what month is on the plaque.

A = month

Nearby, at waypoint Ludwig (look behind the air ventilation shaft), find the plaque commemorating one of Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt's expeditions.

B = the number of people named on the plaque

CDEF = the year the plaque was unveiled.

Third letter of additional hint : second line, first word, last letter.

Move on to waypoint ARL to find the plaque to find a plaque commemorating an important event held just over 100 years ago.

GHIJKLMN = the day of the meeting (in the form DDMMYYYY)

Second letter of additional hint : last line, first word, first letter

Now off to waypoint BUS. It’s on the third level at gate 36. Unfortunately the bus terminal isn't what it used to be - the western end is no longer accessible. To find the 5m * 3m mural painted by Harry Finch – “A History of Transport in Brisbane” follow these directions : proceed to level 3 via the escalators, turn left at the top of the escalators and head out the doors toward the taxi rank, once outside turn right and head west under the awning to gate 36, you should pass a set of elevators in an alcove and maybe a pile of wheelie bins. There is a number 36 painted on the ground. Peer in through the locked doors and you should be able to see the mural. There is a picture by tramwayjohnon flickr.

It's a bit dark to find the numbers on the bus, so try these instead.

At the top of the door on either side are two yellow stickers. They are the same and refer to a feature of the door. There are 2 phone numbers.

O = 7th digit of mobile number.
P = 8th digit of land line number.
Q = sum of the last 2 digits of the mobile number.
R = last digit of the landline number.
S = 5th digit of land line number.
T = 6th digit of mobile number.

To get the first letter for the extra hint, look at the Conditions of Entry sign. There are 15 of them. Note the first letter of the first word of the third line of condition 10 which starts "The Company or their Manager..." as the first letter of the additional hint

Or you can try these if you can see the mural well enough. On the blue council bus above Harry's signature in the bottom right hand corner

OPQ = the bus number

RST = the route number

First letter of additional hint : from framed white sign, third paragraph, second word, first letter

Now find a seat to perform some maths to determine GZ

The cache is located at S 27° 28.abc E 153° 01.def where:

a = M*A+S

b = B-T-P

c = I+J

d = C+F-Q

e = (D*E)/O+R+L-H

f = K+N

For an additional hint at GZ, these letters will be useful in this order BUS, ARL, Ludwig.

After you have found the cache why not visit the Police Museum. It's on the ground floor of the police HQ. Entrance is at waypoint HQ. It's free and interesting. Opening hours are 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 3pm on the last Sunday of each Month (Feb to Nov).
