Ribbons of Life

Stream-side Vegetation Aquatic, wetland,riparian and upland vegetation types are all critical to a stream's health. These plants provide food, perching and nesting sites, protective cover from predators, shelter against the weather, and shade which helps cool the stream.

Their roots help stabilize the banks by holding the soil together, thus minimizing the erosion. As banks stabilize, the stream channel usually becomes deeper and narrower. These changes keep the stream cooler and the create better habitat for fish and other aquatic wildlife. Stream-side vegetation in an established functional flood plain also helps redyc flood damage by slowing the water down and reducing the destructive energy of natural flood flows.
