Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. This is a combination of a multi-stage and a puzzle cache. Dad famkoe loves history and Mom famkoe loves Sudoku puzzles, so this cache combines the two!

Note: Please respect reserved parking during business hours. All stages are within easy walking distance from the initial position.

Step 1: Go to the posted coordinates which is part of the Johann G. Barkman Heritage Walkway. Towards the west you will see a large ditch called Stony Brook from which Steinbach gets its name. If you look beyond the ditch you will be able to see a historic mural of Steinbach Main Street.

Step 2: Stand at the curb in front of the middle of the Main Street mural and read your coordinates.

Step 3: In order to get the coordinates for the actual cache you will need to adjust the coordinates you obtained at Step 2 as follows: add 0.AB0' to the N coordinate and add 0.0CD' to the W coordinate by solving the following Sudoku puzzle.

If you have never done one of these puzzles before, the directions are fairly simple. Just fill in the missing numbers so every row, column and 3x3 quadrant contains the numbers 1 through 9.

Step 4: To get to the final coordinates you calculated in Step 3, follow the Johann G. Barkman Heritage Walkway on the NE side of Elmdale Street. Along the way to the final cache location, there are a number of plaques. If you want to understand the significance of this water cache, be sure to stop and read the plaques at the following locations:
N 49° 31.677 W 096° 41.013
N 49° 31.728 W 096° 41.093

Important Update (July 29, 2009): When we took the original readings for the cache location, we only got 8 to 9 m accuracy despite trying for 20 minutes. With the help of fellow geocachers we have now changed the position of the letters in the Sudoku puzzle to update the coordinates. The puzzle is the same as the original one but the updated offset should get you closer to the cache. Smarts rather than strength will release the cache once you find its location.

Congratulations to Clan Lonewolf on the First To Find!!
