Geocache Description:

Located a 500m walk from Ross Creek. Park at the end of the dirt road, before you cross the bridge. You have to walk along the shore in order to reach the cache so you MUST consult the tides before venturing to this cache.

Lime Cove is a great spot if you enjoy rockhounding. It is one of only three places where the Scotts Bay geological formation is visible (the others are towards Scotts Bay). The formation is about 150 million years old. The limestone is the grey-white rock and there are many samples of petrified trees embedded in it. They are the brick red jasper that you will find in circular form (tree stumps)in the side of the embankment and in samples on the beach. They sometimes have a core of amethyst. Chert with agate is also found here. To create the agate and jasper from the trees, steam was escaping for millions of years as the land cooled down (the basalt is hardened lava) and the steam and its ingredients would have slowly changed the trees from wood to the rock that you see.

To log this cache you must take a picture of yourself with GPS in front of the fossils in the bank and post on the site. E-mail us how many tree fossils you see in the bank and the total approximate area they cover.
